After a short period of figurative work, Morellet turned to abstraction in 1950 adopting a pictorial language of simple geometric forms: lines, squares and triangles assembled into two-dimensional compositions. In 1961, he was one of the founders of the Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (GRAV) in Paris. From that time on Franois Morellet has been using systems to achieve the utmost of objectivity: "For me systems are a kind of rules to the game, concise and predominating the work, its development and realization. I've chosen this expression, because it describes an attitude that I like very much, that of artists not identifying themselves with what they're making [...]. A system permits one to diminish the number of subjective decisions and let the work evolve itself towards the spectator, so to say."
