Matthias van Arkel's paintings are not made on traditional material such as canvas or wood, but are composed of dyed platinum silicone rubber.
The material itself becomes the carrier of both the colour and of the artistic expression, and the work hence oscillates somewhere in between painting and sculpture. The painting is forceful, carried out with an intuitive sense of colour. As physical wall objects, the paintings are strikingly three-dimensional.
Van Arkel works in a strong painterly tradition, relating to American expressionists such as Jackson Pollock and John Chamberlain, but also stands in dialogue with contemporary artists who strive to stretch the boundaries of painting.
