40 years ago herman de vries visited the greek
island of gavdos, south of crete. at the time,
the island had no regular boat service and was
scarcely visited. the inhabitants - 80 then -
still used donkeys for transportation.

herman always had wanted to return to this
paradise to him and finally he did in 2016.
the result of this visit is a beautiful body of work,
shown for the first time and consisting of a
73 part ‘journal’, stone works, as well as a
series of 15 earth rubbings a.o.

also his son vince de vries shot a poetic
documentary on the occasion.
