Sonia Rijnhout, 'Revisited: An Oceanic Desire'
friday, december 3, 17-19:00
(exhibition until january 15)

The title of the exhibition orginates from a painting Sonia Rijnhout made in 1977, which she 'revisited' and used as a starting point for an entire body of works, consisting of recent regular square canvases, as well as of 'Pluriforms', square grids scattered over the canvas and cut out.

Sonia calls her work 'an artificial variation on nature', referring to the architecture and traffic movement in the cities we live in.  To put it in her own words:

"Far from the wilderness of nature, my life takes place in the artificial habitat of the metropolis. The space surrounding me is completely man-made; my movements are determined by structures laid out and organised to make large-scale forces function. Order and planning are carried through to the extreme, and manifest themselves as much in megaconstructions, as in small scale facilities. Branching interminably, its interrelating parts become entangled in a spontaneous and uncontrolled way, functioning as self-organising life-forms.

It is my perception, that these surroundings have developed into an artificial variation on nature. The two-dimensional images I create, mirror phenomena like these; each of my images tries to recreate reality."
