Maryanto (Indonesia, 1977) has just finished his studies at Post-graduate Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, showing an overwhelming mural, that filled the entire space. This stay made it possible for him to freely experiment, questioning his techniques and developing his subject.
When he chooses to work on canvas, he starts with painting it black. Then Maryanto scratches the black surface with a sharp object, 'drawing' into the material and revealing parts of the canvas again.
In earlier works Maryanto had his paintings inhabited by phantasy creatures, such as 'humans' with animal heads. These works dealt with life in Indonesia, poverty and the hardship of living in slums.
Later grotesque machines came into play, that seemed to be capable of swalling total landscapes at once. These paintings show his concern about the beautiful Indonesian landscape being destroyed by industry.
In more recent work, politics - i.e. the former president Suharto - play a role. This man has left an unerasable impression on the country and its population. While building the image of 'Father of the country', he was collecting wealth for himself and his kin, at the same time leaving the people empty handed.
By the physical distance being in the Netherlands, Maryanto was able to do research and see history in a different perspective, which resulted in a new body of work.
Art Affairs is showing a survey of the development during his two years' stay at Rijksakademie, including a documentary film.
